At noon on Wall Street, the Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks was down 73.52 points to 2,887.52. Volume on the Big Board came to 124.24 milliori shares, compared with 71.17 million at the same time Friday. Declining issues outnumbered advances by about 7 to 1 on the NYSE, with 183 up, 1,317 down and 346 unchanged.
A wave of computer program selling, weak corporate earnings led by McDonald's and concerns about broad economic factors sent stocks down at the opening bell. The sharp drop in the Dow followed a week in which the key market indicator flirted with the level, breaking the barrier several times but failing to close above it. Analysts said that failure added to pessimism market's underlying strength. The Dow average dropped more than 107 points before rebounding. At the same time, selling was halted temporarily in the Chicago stock-index futures markets when the Stan: dard Poor's 500-stock index fell 20 points.
It later recovered most of the the ground. Traders said the recovery in the markets was technical in nature and sustained by computerized trading strategies that kicked in when the market hit lows. Analysts blamed the decline on continued disappointment with second quarter corporate earnings and on concern over larger economic issues, such as the federal budget deficit and the costly savings and loan bailout. A big selloff overnight in the Treasury bond market also help pushed down stocks. McDonald's was down 10 after reporting lower-than -expected second quarter earnings.
It was the most actively traded Big Board issue. Among other. blue-chip stocks, IBM was down 1 to American Express was off to General Electric lost to 71 Boeing drppped to 56 Philip Morris declined to 48 and Upjohn was down to The NYSE's composite index of all its listed common stocks was down 4.00 to 193.65.
